The Onion 500-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle
Since its inception, The Onion news empire has shown no signs of slowing down in its insatiable quest for complete domination of the independent journalism sector. Now, their relentless tirade has finally breached the cornerstone of the media landscape: jigsaw puzzles. Upon completion of this 500-piece mental acuity challenge, a historic (albeit timely) front page image will reveal itself to you. Prepare to have your mind gently tested.

While working with The Onion, I collaborated with the internal Onion Creative team to concept, develop, and design the newest addition to their licensed product line; the 500-piece Jigsaw Puzzle. The Onion’s goal was clear: feature classic headlines from their early print publications in a design that would resonate with both online and mass retail audiences. My process involved exploring archival content to identify headlines that balanced nostalgia with The Onion’s signature satire. From there, I developed layouts, color palettes, and typography that honored the brand’s irreverent tone while maintaining broad consumer appeal. The final design transforms an iconic headline from My Dumb Century into a buildable, collectible puzzle experience.

Launching for the 2025/26 season, The 500-Piece Onion Jigsaw Puzzle brings The Onion’s humor to life through thoughtful design, collaboration, and a deep understanding of the brand’s voice.
